All states require public school teachers to be licensed. In private schools, however, teachers are not required to be licensed. Requirements vary by state.Many states award provisional teaching licenses to new teachers. After a period of several years of acceptable teaching experience, applicants may apply for a professional teaching license.Some states also require applicants to submit their fingerprints and undergo a background check. They may also require teachers to obtain a master's degree in education. In addition, many states require teachers to take continuing education courses each year.

Teaching License-Standard (18-0000000029)

In order to obtain a standard teaching license, the candidate must: Have completed an approved teacher preparation program at a state- or regionally-accredited institution. Possess a Bachelor's degree from a state- or regionally-accredited institution. Have achieved passing scores on the applicable teacher exams. Have completed a minimum of six semester hours of college course work in education or the major or minor area of the candidate's license within the past five years. Submit an application. Pay all application and examination fees. Graduates of out-of-state teacher education programs my be required to have their credentials evaluated by the Board or an outside credentialing agency. Licenses must be renewed every five years, subject to certain continuing education requirements. More detailed information may be obtained from the Indiana Professional Standards Board.
